Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a compound crystallizing in the rocksalt structure. Recently, MgO films have attracted much attention as a buffer layer for the deposition of high-T csuperconductors or ferroelectric s and as a wide-band-gap II–VI semiconductor for potential optoelectronic device applications . This material has very low standard free energy and, hence, high thermodynamic stability, and is insoluble in water.
